science day 3 part 2: elephant's toothpaste

take an old soda bottle/water bottle and pour 1/2 c. hydrogen peroxide into bottle with a few drops of food coloring and liquid dish soap.  Mix 1 tsp. yeast with 2 tbs. hot water in a bowl, and pour into the bottle.  it was supposed to look like toothpaste coming out of the bottle, but really it looked like pink shaving cream.  the kids loved it!

Science Day 3: liquid layers

 

 

 

fill glasses 1/2 way with slightly colored water (ours was light purple)

add some oil and some molasses until you have 3 different layers.

 

 

we then put small objects of different weight (hazelnut, penny, rock, bouncy ball, strawberry) into the glasses, and observe which layer they rest on.

Science Day 2: Cloud in a Cup

 everybody got a cup full of water

 shaving cream on top, add a couple drops of food coloring

 I don't think it worked the way it was supposed to.  I only had Lucy's directions to go from.  Apparently, they did this experiment in her class at the beginning of the school year.

Eventually, they just started stirring and playing in it.  At least the kids had fun with it!

We're expecting a baby this December.  Don't know if it's a boy or a girl, yet, but maybe the 5th time is a charm?  :D

summer of science fun: fizzy fountain

I stole most of these science experiments from the ones on my friend, Brittany's, blog, which she in turn got from books and internet sites and such.  This one was similar to making a lava lamp, and the kids loved it!
Fill a bottle 3/4 full with cooking oil, and fill the rest of the way with water.  Add several drops of different colors of food coloring.  Break up some alka seltzer tablets and add a few pieces at a time and watch the sciencey (that's a word, right?) fun unfold!
